Originally, we weren’t exactly sure how to market the Touch. Was it an iPhone without the phone? Was it a pocket computer? What happened was, what customers told us was, they started to see it as a game machine. We started to market it that way, and it just took off. And now what we really see is it’s the lowest-cost way to the App Store, and that’s the big draw. So what we were focused on is just reducing the price to $199. We don’t need to add new stuff. We need to get the price down where everyone can afford it.

iPod 3g rumors

NEW Apple OLED Notebook & iPhone Confirmed By LG

Apple is set to launch new OLED notebooks and flat panel monitors along with a new OLED iPhone claim sources at LG in Korea. It's also believed that a new iPhone and iPod Touch due later this year will include an OLED screen made by LG who last year scored a multibillion dollar deal to manufacture display screens for Apple. One source that SmartHouse has spoken to claims that Apple already have working prototype of a new Netbook which will be manufactured in Taiwan with the OLED screen supplied by LG.LG have also said that they intend to increase their R&D investment by 25% with significant investments going into OLED solar and new battery technology. The Company has told ChannelNews that they will invest over $3B into R&D over the next 18 months and that recently Apple paid the Company over $500M US dollars up front to work on new monitor and display technology. Sources in Taiwan told ChannelNews last month that Apple were looking at an OLED based notebook that will also incorporate new touch screen technology. Now sources in Korea are saying that this information is correct and that one area where LG has been testing OLED panels is in the area of touch sensitivity and "leave behind finger marks".Th e sources claim that in recent testing OLED screens used on a notebook attracted "body oils and sweat" when a finger was constantly used on a screen. LG believe that by adding a layer in the manufacturing process that they can eliminate "finger marking".Smarthouse was also told that Apple is looking at a wafer thin OLED screen made by LG that will link with a wireless content device similar to the current Apple TV box.

THE NEWS ABOUT 3.0 SOFTWARE

What's going on?

Apple are giving us a sneak peek at the upcoming iPhone 3.0 Operating System, and a look at the future SDK for iPhone developing. The event was on Tuesday the 17th of March at 10am PST, at Apple's HQ in Cupertino (instead of San Fransisco where Apple normally hold big events.)

What's new in 3.0?
  • The new OS has over 100 new features for customers.
  • Copy and Paste is finally here! Huzzah!

As spoiled on Diggnation, double tap, drag, tap copy, and then double tap, paste. Shake your device to undo. Works on all apps, for anything from text to HTML.
  • You can now email more than one photo at once, in the same way you can mass delete/move mail. Just tap the action button, choose photo thumbnails and SHARE.
  • Landscape mode has come to more apps than just Safari... you can now use them in key applications like... SMS, Notes and... MAIL!
  • SMS is upgraded too. You can now delete and forward multiple messages.
  • MMS is coming too. You can send pictures via text messages. Why wasn't this in iPhone 1.1.x?
  • Voice Memos. Record yourself with the iPhone's mic, trim it on the iPhone itself, and then send it around.

  • Support for two more calendar types. CalDAV (Google and Yahoo) and Subscriptions (using .ics files.)
  • In Stocks, they’ve added support for news stories (headlines) in the bottom of the app. You can also get details like highs and lows and PEs. And landscape view.
  • Added search functions in Mail, Calendar, Music - Searching support was on Remote (app) but not on the iPhone's actual music app... Hmm
  • Mac users will be familiar with Spotlight, the search bar in the top right of all Macs. Well it's coming to the iPhone. Just flick left on your homescreen and it will open up - and you can search your whole device! VERY useful.

  • Here's an image with a whole lot more additions that Apple never talked about. Notice the YouTube app looks like it's getting a major update. Also, live streaming. And ability to sync notes. AND shake to shuffle! Loads of new features coming in 3.0

What about the SDK?
  • SDK 3.0 will bring 1000 new APIs.

    Quote:
In game voice chat, iPod library access, proximity sensor, audio recorder, battery API, streaming audio and video, data detectors, text selection, UI alert view, shake API (for rumble) and GPS lingo.
  • A new API will allow Peer-to-Peer connectivity between devices over Bonjour. This is amazing for games, as you can have multiplayer with no Wifi network around!
  • Devs will be able to write code to be able to talk to hardware. For example, here is an FM radio - If you connect your iPod Touch to it, you can control the stations, volume, and more!

The accessories will be able to talk over the dock connector - AND Bluetooth.
  • Developers will be able to use the Google Maps interface inside their applications - Rather than the app having to open the Maps app itself.
  • The devs can add turn-by-turn functionality into their apps! Allowing things like SatNav.
  • Push notification is finally here. But - Apple says no to background processing: Battery life falls significantly (80% fall). But with Push notifications, battery decreases - But lasts longer (20% fall).

I heard there was App Store enhancements?
  • "In-App Purchase" brings extra revenue to developers - who can now sell new things to go along with their applications! This will be for paid apps only though.

Anything else?
  • Apple set themselves a goal before they shipped their first iPhone - To sell over 10 million. They smashed the record, by selling 17 million! (But with iPod Touches aswell - Over 30 million!)
  • 62% of people who downloaded the old SDK, had never developed an Apple application before.
  • In the 8 months, there have been 800 million application downloads in total.
  • 15 more countries have been added to the App Store list - That makes 77.

    Future Application Releases.
  • Meebo are making an IM app which connects with social networking sites too. It will use the new push notification. Could there finally be a decent, cheap IM app?
  • The Sims 3 is coming to the App Store. EA have stuck a load of 3.0 features into the app: for example, you'll be able to buy items for the game (presumably furniture and clothing) for 99 cents each (59p)

    Quote:
For example, playing music from the stereo in the game lets you play music back from YOUR music library (from the 3.0 SDK API)
  • Ngmoco were over at the event - And announced LiveFire (a 3rd person multiplayer shooter game) and are showing off their TouchPets app (out soon - look on the ngmoco site.)

TouchPets uses push notifications to tell you when a friend wants to make a play-date with you. It also uses in-app purchases so you can buy food and clothes for your dog. Personally, I'd let it starve!

LiveFire is an FPS game. You control by touching the screen. Again, you can send notifications to friends, and buy weapons in-game to play with. It also looks like you'll be able to do in-game voice chats too - Just like on an Xbox or PS3!

  • Smule (the makers of the legendary music app, Ocarina) demoed their new app: Leaf Trombone. Another music app. Using the iPhone's mic and finger-to-screen controls. A duet was played using the new peer-to-peer API.

Recap

To recap the big features in 3.0: In-App purchase to enable more app functionality, peer to peer connectivity, accessory connectivity, Google map controls, push notifications, cut and paste, landscape mode, Messages (MMS), voice memos, new Calendar support, enhancements to the Stock App and search (Spotlight). Plus, Bluetooth, if you’re really looking forward to that one.

The 3.0 Beta is available to all members of the iPhone Developer Program.

It will be coming out in June 2009 for us normal users! $9.95 for iPod Touches, free for iPhones. Not all features will work on the 1st gen iPhone.

Q&A with Apple.

Q: Josh Quittner, Time: Why did it take so long so get Cut and Paste into the iPhone?
A: There’s a user interface you need to design, security issues, and “there’s a lot of pieces you need to worry about instead of getting something that doesn’t work right.”

Q: Flash? What are you doing?
A: We have no announcements on that topic today. But there are a lot of video streams we can handle. h.264 works great. We're adding HDTV streaming for audio and video. We think there's a lot of great video solutions for a single clip.

Q: Could you qualify a bit more about the peer to peer. It looks like it’s available across the two iPhones, but it seems like you can do peer to peer with other Bluetooth devices.
A: It’s really a device to device Bluetooth connection. It’s 1 to 1, using Bluetooth and Bonjour to discover other devices and make an IP connection.

Q: So you can control devices…?
A: Yes, now you can, with third-party applications, control and talk to accessories over Bluetooth.

Q: Are people able to trade files, say music files, through iPods with this?
A: We have the ability to stream music to music apps, and certainly a game, if a game has music in the game it would be possible to download game tracks, but if would be confusing for other music apps with downloadable music that isn’t through the app store.

Q: Where do you stand on tethering?
A: There’s two pieces needed to support that: client side and working with carriers. We’re absolutely supporting tethering in the client side in iPhone 3.0, but we’re working with carriers around the world to see when they can add tethering support on their networks. But we are building that support into iPhone 3.0.

Q: Can you say anything about hardware?
A: No.

Q: Netbooks?
A: Nothing to announce today.

Q: Will you make any promises about push notification in terms of uptime?
A: No. We want it to be as reliable as possible.

Q: On the voice memo, you mentioned external microphones. Could you use an off-the-shelf microphone?
A: Yes absolutely, if you have an adapter.

Q: Are you addressing some of the performance issues in the current OS? It’s slightly laggy, are you going to address that in 3.0.
A: We absolutely take performance very seriously. These units, because they’re tethered, are more laggy than you would see on standalone units. But we are addressing lagginess in our own ways.

Q: Is there a physical hardware problem on the first-gen iPhone that prevents it from doing MMS.
A: It’s a different radio, so it is a physical issue.

Q: With Peer to Peer, can you have access to other iTunes library?
A: You can see them but I don’t know if you can play them.

Q: Bluetooth on the iPod touch?
A: Bluetooth is a capability we can “unlock” on the latest-gen iPod touch.

FINALLY UNTETHERED JAILBREAK FOR iPOD TOUCH 2G!!!

Here it is. Just drop it into your existing pwnagetool or xpwn flow. You can even combine it with the nor-only variations to make this easy to install from iTunes without touching your main fs.http://iphwn.org/24kpwn.zipIt's bitter sweet that this has to come out in this manner, because it *really* would have been nice to save for the next iPhone. On the other hand, nobody knows the struggle to jb like iPod Touch 2G owners So it's good for them. Now it's a waiting game to see if Apple can react fast enough.Edit:The patch needs to be applied directly to the LLB without decrypting it first, using "bspatch" or equivalent. The resulting img3 should have this sha1:SHA1(LLB.n72ap.RELEASE.img3)= 82734c7cdf945ba5421b83962aab3ab91e4fb23a

finally jailbreak for ipod touch 2g

the past day i saw a tutorial to jailbreak the ipod touch 2g in ipod touch fans so i decided to put it here

What you'll need:
redsn0w lite
XPwn
iRecovery and libusb
2.1.1 IPSW
2.2.1 IPSW
Optional:Installer.app bundle for XPwnXPwn does not include Installer by default, but if you

want to build a custom IPSW that includes Installer.app, save this package to your XPwn-0.5.7-win32\bundles\ folder.Do not extract the .tar, leave it as is!64-bit users: If you're using a 64-bit version of Windows Vista or 7, please follow this. After doing this, libusb should work fine. This may or may not work for you; that's why you shouldn't use a 64-bit OS (that really isn't even 64-bit )All users: If you experience weird errors while running iRecovery (side-by-side configuration errors, etc.), install this.Important but obvious note: Backup your iPod using iTunes (right click on it's name, then select backup); you'll be able to recover all of your data after jailbreaking by selecting to restore form this backup.
1.) Extract redsn0w lite and XPwn to your Desktop.

2.) Save (or move) the 2.2.1 IPSW into the XPwn folder.

3.) Copy the rslite\FirmwareBundles\iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11.bundle folder into your XPwn-0.5.7-win32\FirmwareBundles\ folder.Copy the whole folder, not just the included files.

4.) Open up a Command Prompt (type cmd in the Search bar if on Vista).

5.) Type the following:
Code:cd C:\Users\yourusername\Desktop\XPwn-0.5.7-win32\
ipsw "iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore.ipsw" "iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Custom_Restore.ipsw" -s 700 bundles\Cydia.tarIf you wish to include Installer.app, your syntax will be different. Please be sure you have the Installer tarball in your bundles folder; if you do not have this, it is explained above. However, your syntax would be:
Code:cd C:\Users\yourusername\Desktop\XPwn-0.5.7-win32\
ipsw "iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore.ipsw" "iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Custom_Restore.ipsw" -s 700 bundles\Cydia.tar bundles\Installer.tarIf you're running XP, your location will be a bit different (should be C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Desktop\).Also, if you're running XP (with PowerToys), Vista, or 7, you can easily navigate to folders in a Command Prompt without using cd.Simply hold shift, then right click on a folder (here, for example, you'd shift and right click on XPwn-0.5.7-win32), then select Open Command Window here. This can be done with any other part of this tutorial that involves cd. Thanks, MatthewH12!

6.) Wait for XPwn to finish, it should only take a few minutes.

7.) Extract all files in the iRecovery RAR to your Desktop and open the iRecovery folder, there
should be an installer for libusb located here.If you haven't already installed libusb, please do so now.If you're running Vista or 7, please right click the .exe and select Properties, then click the Compatibility tab, then select Windows XP (Service Pack 2) from the drop-down menu. After install, a restart may be required.

8.) Open another Command Prompt (or use the one you used before, if it is still up) and type the following:
Code:cd C:\Users\yourusername\Desktop\iRecovery\iRecovery_SVNAgain, your location will be different if you're on XP, see above.

9.) Extract your 2.1.1 iBSS and 2.2.1 iBSS and iBoot. To do so, right click your 2.1.1 IPSW and select Open with > WinRAR archiver.Navigate to the Firmware\dfu directory, then drag iBSS.n72ap.RELEASE.dfu into your iRecovery_SVN folder.Rename it iBSS211.dfu.Now, open up your custom 2.2.1 IPSW using WinRAR.First, navigate to the Firmware\dfu folder and drag iBSS.n72ap.RELEASE.dfu into your iRecovery_SVN folder.Rename is iBSS221.dfu.Now, navigate to the Firmware\all_flash\all_flash.n72ap.production folder.Extract iBoot.n72ap.RELEASE.img3 to your iRecovery_SVN folder.Rename it iBoot221.img3.

10.) Put your iPod into DFU mode.If you're unfamiliar with DFU mode, you can put your iPod into it by holding the power button, then sliding to power off.Hold both the home and power buttons for 10 seconds (count in your head, it should be fine if you're off by a few seconds). After 10 seconds, release the power button and continue holding the home button for 15-25 seconds.Your screen shouldn't turn on, but your device should be recognized by iTunes as being in recovery mode.If at any point Windows claims that the device is unrecognized, be very exact with your timing and you should be able to enter DFU mode.Bring up your Command Prompt again and execute the following:
Code:iRecovery -f iBSS211.dfuYour iPod's screen should turn white. If it doesn't, unplug your iPod and wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.

11.) In the same Command Prompt, enter the following:
Code:iRecovery -s
arm7_stop
mw 0x9000000 0xe59f3014
mw 0x9000004 0xe3a02a02
mw 0x9000008 0xe1c320b0
mw 0x900000c 0xe3e02000
mw 0x9000010 0xe2833c9d
mw 0x9000014 0xe58326c0
mw 0x9000018 0xeafffffe
mw 0x900001c 0x2200f300
arm7_go
arm7_stop
/exitJust to clarify, you will hit enter after each of these commands.

12.) Restore to your custom firmware using iTunes (hold shift and hit Restore, then select iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11_Custom_Restore.ipsw).It may hang on "Preparing.." for a long time; just wait it out, it'll move on eventually.

13.) After your restore is complete, put you iPod into DFU mode.It may seem like your iPod is "bricked" (Windows says the device is unrecognized), but don't panic.Simply be very exact with your DFU timing and iTunes should recognize your device (it'll tell you it needs to be restored, don't do that though).Enter the following in your Command Prompt:
Code:iRecovery -f iBSS211.dfuUnplug your iPod, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.Your screen should be white now.Run the following after:
Code:iRecovery -s
arm7_stop
mw 0x9000000 0xe59f3014
mw 0x9000004 0xe3a02a02
mw 0x9000008 0xe1c320b0
mw 0x900000c 0xe3e02000
mw 0x9000010 0xe2833c9d
mw 0x9000014 0xe58326c0
mw 0x9000018 0xeafffffe
mw 0x900001c 0x2200f300
arm7_go
arm7_stop
/sendfile iBSS221.dfu
go
/exitWait for your iPod to reconnect (it should disappear in iTunes, then reappear in a couple seconds).Run the following:
Code:iRecovery -f iBoot221.img3
iRecovery -s
go
/exit

14.) Your iPod should now be booting

i do not make this tutorial, i copy it from ipod touch fans.
happy jailbreaking ; )
